Yeah, headlines are not my strong suit… I’ll admit it.

I find I either sway from “over the top level salesy with just a hint of clickbait” to “don’t even bother clicking because this headline doesn’t apply to you.”

Sad, but true.

I’m going to try using some of the headline examples you gave here in upcoming posts.

Good to see you again!
Headlines are a funny thing. On the one hand we need to improve them to get readers to our site. But on the other hand, as you mention, you lose them if you title does not live up to expectations (within reason of course).
So it is indeed a fine balance.
I try not to blow my titles up too much and mis-sell my content. But we have to be heard above the noise!

I have a bunch of articles from Copyblogger, etc. on headline writing. I’ve tried a few, but some have become cliches and when I see a headline that starts “The secret of…” I’m a little suspect. The key is that the content has to deliver on the headline. I’ve been dragooned into reading posts with headlines that sizzled and content that flopped. I have to say that the most prominent bloggers (who shall remain nameless) have begun to use grabber headlines that lead you to think you will learn something new and the post turns into a sales pitch.

It’s a balancing act. You have to be true to your goals for your blog: is it to monetize your blog? Then you need more than a headline; you need a product or service(s) that you can sell. Or is to build your brand online for developing business off-line? Headlines are extremely important but it’s not the whole story.

At this point, i think it’s just semantics and what each of us understand when we say “headlines”. When i read “blog headlines” – i understand blog post title and subtitle (if there is one, almost never is :D). And in your post – headline means kinda brief line which can be your blog post title, or just a line of text which represents the post. Which is cool – just different from what i pictured when i saw the title… Because you can attach different text to links – and all links go to a specific blog post; but that blog post will always have the same title… So i thought the post will help me improve that title… right, as i said – semantics. hahah
