As a new blogger it is hard to compete, so you are better off being specific – in what you write and what keywords you target. It works in many areas, including your niche.
I made the mistake (and am still recovering from it) of not doing this enough in the beginning and am not necessarily known for a topic – bad idea!

This is exactly what Google is doing these days – LSI and a few other search methods. So they are no longer just focusing on one keyword and it’s variants, but on a knowledge base of related words.

So in your example, if there are words that are often/always used together when talking about a type of furniture, then use them in the post. It helps Google to “really know” what you are talking about and separate it from possible related but different topics.

Glad you wrote this post. I noticed most sites I follow and subscribed to use short tail key words. I wondered if I follow them, it would be so hard to compete!

Now, since you recommend this, I’ll be sure to try using long tail key words and see if it would work for me.

great post, and it reminded me (again) to look into some detailed keywords. Do you know by the way how Google deals with keywords that have synonyms? I am writing for one website that sells furniture kits in the mission style, but they’re also called craftsman style furniture kits. I change it up every now and then, and I believe I’ve looked into search volume but would love to hear your thoughts on this. I know Google can suggest synonyms, but I don’t know how specific those synonyms can get.

Long tail is the way to go and I recommend it. Even Google suggest or similar tools that show you what people actually type in are great.
Keyword Planner only works mostly for bigger traffic. They hide quite a lot of words from us :>

As for Alexa, pfff. Don’t sweat it. I stopped watching mine over a year ago.
Vanity metrics my friend, forget it.

I will have to look into that tool, I have not used it.
Watch out chasing Alexa rank, it does not always bring much. Instead, if you are after higher rankings, watch Open Site Explorer or Majestic, and aim for blogs to guest post on that are higher than you with scores from those sites (Trust Flow or Domain Authority)

Glad you agree. Sometimes longtail keywords come from surprising places and phrases. You have to check in Webmaster tools too and see what you are actually ranking for and also focus those posts more towards that, even long after the fact.
