It is a hard task for sure, and one I have not done yet.
But when I am focused on one task and always have to repeat it, then I will take the time to outsource.
It is worth it

About the control and wanting to know what’s going on, when, how, etc. – it’s doable, too. I have had clients like that – they want to learn to do stuff so I take the time and walk them through it. Of course time line, price quotes and alike are a must so that you don’t get ripped off.

But these should *not* be confused with micromanagement. It is OK to be curious and/or to want to be in the loop. If communicated in advance, the right freelancer won’t mind. But it is *not* OK to ask for updates morning and evening, pop up on skype any time expecting a conversation, requesting constant availability, endless changes because you “feel like it”… This pretty much doesn’t allow the freelancer to truly do their job.

I think if you approach the whole matter with the attitude ‘I work with this freelancer’ and not ‘this freelancer works for me’ – you will not have problem with the level of control, comfortable to both of you.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Mi Muba! You are so right – when working with freelancers, the saying “you get what you pay for” holds 100% true. Try to cut prices and it instantly reflects on the end result – be it not as good quality, missed deadlines, etc.

Top performing freelancers like their freedom and clients should take advantage of that by just letting them do their job 😀

Hi, Steven! Just to add some food for thought – re: finding a freelancer who cares about your project as much as you do. It’s totally possible.

It depends on the type of person you find (a.k.a. how you look for them and filter your candidates afterwards) but also – how you motivate them. The right (for you) freelancer *will* care for your project pretty close to as much as you do 😀

It boils down to interpersonal communication – if they are interested in your product or service, AND if they work well with you as a person, they won’t know how not to care about your project…

A lot of people are outsourcing to the Philippines because of their English and skill level.
Of course remote workers are hard to filter and control, but in the end with the flexibility and savings you get, I think it is worth the effort.
I still need to go through the process myself.

I understand the hesitation with giving up control, especially when it is something you have worked hard on and know inside out. But if you put good processes in place, I think it can be done, at least with some easier parts of what we do.

With her personal work with clients and her blog on freelancing, she gives away a lot of great info.
