MLP007: Instagram – Using Images for Social Media Success w/ Jenn Herman

instagram with jenn hermanI can almost guarantee that you are not using Instagram for marketing purposes (if at all).

Am I right? (you can let me know in the comments)

But you are missing out on some amazing opportunities!

Instagram is growing like crazy. In fact, according to Business Insider:

Instagram grew its user base to 150 million monthly active users in half the time that it took Twitter and in two years less than Facebook

Not only that, but according to today’s Podcast guest – Jenn Herman, you will also get highly qualified traffic from Instagram.

Any traffic that comes to your site from there, is more motivated than almost any other social media site.

All you need to do is share your awesome pictures! Well, almost.

To find out how to really make the most of Instagram, let’s listen to an expert (i.e. someone who knows a lot more than us).

Jenn Herman Shares Her Best Instagram Tips

jenn hermanJenn Herman is a huge fan and expert user of Instagram.

Not only that, but she was voted in the Top Ten Social Media Blogs of 2014, by Social Media Examiner.

She knows what she is talking about!

In this podcast I asked her all about Instagram, from the perspective of both a beginner and a marketer.

So if you have an interest in expanding your reach, using visual marketing to impress your audience, or just a new channel to spread your content, then this podcast is for you.

In this episode Jenn and I have perhaps a little too much fun discussing:

  • What exactly Instagram is and how effective the traffic is (hint: amazing)
  • How Instagram lends itself to cross-promotion (repurposing)
  • Jenn also shares her best practice tips on
    • How to share on Instagram
    • Use of descriptions
    • Optimal hashtag use
    • Finding followers and following etiquette
  • She also shares a little secret on getting people to your site
  • What tools to use for finding hashtags and monitoring your stats
  • How to make the best images on mobile or PC (yes, both are possible)

In short, Jenn gives us the lowdown on how best to use Instagram (and perhaps more importantly, how not to use it).

She even gave up her Sunday morning to talk to me!

I would appreciate a Review on iTunes Or Stitcher

As this podcast is just starting out, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a review on iTunes to help me promote it and reach more people.

I have a quick How To Do a Review on iTunes (only because it may not be so simple to find the place to do it).

If you don’t really need to head to iTunes or Stitcher, you can find all the previous podcasts here

Final Words

Instagram is perhaps one of the least used of the big social media networks.

But if I may quote Jenn directly from the podcast:

The traffic you get (from Instagram) is extremely high quality traffic

So if you like visuals, enjoy the fast pace of Twitter, or just need a new social media channel, give Instagram a try!

That’s true, though not all niches can benefit from Instragram marketing, but of course others can get a superboost of online marketing campaign.

  2. Brandon says:

Ashley, as always… well done. Instagram is definitely one of my favorite social sites. I’ve actually gotten a lot of people that have reached out to me via my Instagram page and they’ve turned into great clients.

    Hi Ashley,

It is such an awesome podcast on Instagram and you know what? I am going to definitely get a bit active on Instagram (a network I have constantly and intentionally ignored so far).

Thank you for this awesome chat with Jenn! Appreciate you guys!

    • Thanks Kumar
I have also not even considered it before. In fact, I rarely read anything about it outside Jenns’s blog either.
It seems to be the forgotten social media site.
Let us both see what it can do for us!

  4. Two of my favorites on one awesome podcast! Excellent tips Ashley and it was fun to hear Jenn’s voice. She and I are connected everywhere across social and she does a terrific job not just on Instagram, but everywhere she spends her time.

I completely agree on the power of Instagram. It’s a huge missed opportunity for many businesses simply because they don’t get it as a marketing tool.

    • Hi Rebekah
So pleased you liked the chat with Jenn. She is an easy person to talk to, especially about Instagram :>
I think like Pinterest (but perhaps worse) Instagram is misunderstood by many.
With this podcast, my hope is that we have empowered people to use it and gain traffic and customers as a result.
Of course there is far more to it than we discussed, but it is a start

      thanks for dropping by

  5. Ashley — Is it possible to include a link to the podcast script? I can read much faster than I can listen and almost an hour of a podcast is a productive use of your time if you drive a car. But I live in NYC and do a lot of walking but it’s too noisy to listen to a podcast. My feet are my primary mode of transportation. I know from my friends and relatives that Instagram is the new Facebook. These new social sites are springing up just when you thought there was nothing new to invent! PS, glad you leg is healing.

    • Hi Jeannette
I am working on transcripts for my podcasts. I know it is something that many people want to have.
I have submitted my next podcast for transcription and will see how that one turns out before I go back and do others.
I will certainly keep you updated as I know you are one of the first who asked :>
      I have not forgotten!
      thanks for dropping by

Well I must say thank you for sharing such an awesome post though I haven’t listen to the pod cast yet. I’ve downloaded it and will schedule it for tomorrow.

Secondly the idea of promoting stuff at instagram is really cool. I’d gear up with all the shared tips soon.
